When the Prophet Speaks - AI

Singularity

Not certain that I buy it implicitly but the time lines continue to match even after the last several years. More significantly if you go to Drexler's stuff you would almost have to be convinced that it has tracked in general terms since then.

Nano - Singularity

"Studying Active devices and nanosystems"

Is the key phrase.

Better start getting controls in line because it is going to take off like a rocket and when an information based virus can cause physical ramifications on a massive scale nothing will quite be the same.

When the information is the action then he who controls the meme controls the actions.

Ray - Singularity

"With computers in everything from clothing to eyeglasses, software security becomes the quintessential issue," he said.

I am not sure the writer of this Article has read any, Kurzweil or Drexler.

He clearly doesn't grasp the potentials or some of the evidence that is currently staring us in the face.

There really isn't any doubt that Information processing technology is expanding at an exponential pace and feeding on itself. Even in biology (which the author gives short shift) it is obvious that the ability to asses and increasingly adjust biological information is changing at an incredible pace.

The real question is where are the speed bumps and are any of them significant enough to plateau things for a while?

The real key to all of this is that whoever controls the keys within the singularity controls where it goes and how it interacts with others. Security is central to that discussion.

I would have liked to see the speech.

A Demon Tamed - Nanomotor

Maxwell's Demon Results in a Nanomotor well 150 years later anyway.

A significant development that at the same time underscores the validity of visionary ideas to actually occur but also shows that they might take longer than optimists think.

This is Singularly Significant

If they are successful this will change everything.

This would make Control and Security of ACS far, far more important than it currently is.

I am not exaggerating. If it is successful everything changes over the next 15 years.

Anyone who has read my earlier posts will know that I am an on again off again enthusiast then skeptic for most Singularity type topics.

I usually try to be more realistic.

For those who are not into this topic the "Singularity" (Tech as opposed to astronomical or physics) could probably be summed up by what happens when the exponential trends of Moores Law merge with Nano engineering and biotechnology.

The basic concept is that as these exponential trends continue they will reach a point were the expansion and changes occur so quickly that they are beyond the means of the human mind to comprehend them.

I don't know whether current trends will continue uninterrupted or will instead plateau but even if they only continue for a short time there are some very significant changes in the works.

In the realm of info security this could be very important. If microscopic automated machines (bionanomachines might be a better term) run on software and use soon to be discovered communication mechanisms then control system viruses and hackers take on a new significance.

The meme structures, governance, and controls that are used will have to be hybrid solutions just like the systems to be protected. Just like a hybrid approach is necessary to tackling the difficulties emerging in the automated control would as it further integrates with the Internet technological generation, these control systems will have to include information security andControl system like safety and security. They (and we) will also have to adopt biological controls like immunology and other controls to ensure not only their operablility but also their safety.

I know this is a flight of fancy for most of the people reading this but the reality is that even if only a small fraction of what is being (realistically) predicted comes true there will be phenomenal changes to the human race. Changes that are just as (if not more) significant than the changes that the technological revolution of the last century but they will happen over then next 10 to 20 years.

DNA Computers - Look out Diffie Hellman

This is pretty nifty from SciAm.

AND Gates on DNA. The process looks very involved but the new key I see here is that they can feed output directly into another calculation.

I imagine this could lend itself well to massively parallel computing.

Squeeze a few drops into a bunch of test tubes apply the filter gates for the thresholds. Wait for a few hours then sequence the output to find the next Mersenne prime. Diffie-Hellman look out.

I wonder what the key limiting points are for this.

The other interesting item was the manipulators.

The Singularity approaches.

Sane Critique

Wouldn't blame it on the BBC though. Many people find the concept of a tech singularity interesting. It is pretty far out though.

Sort of like talking about conspiracy theorys. It can be fun but when someone lets it change the way they act things are going to far.

Talk and play mind games with the edgy stuff but live in the real world.

Some of our FUD attacks fall into this catagory. We get paid to anticipate the uncommon but we need to keep our feet firmly grounded.

Update:

One comment on the Register Art though. Personal attacks on an author or advocate are not the same as refutations of their arguments. The foundations of the conclusions in "Singularity" were laid in Drexlers work, Moore's law, and current trends. My comment is that prognosticators are almost always mostly wrong.

Books - Some lighter Weekend Fare

Last years Reading list (well some of it anyway)

Non - Fiction

Freakonomics

Thought provoking and good example on how to look at conventional wisdom. Light touch on being realistic about statistics.

Moneyball

Awesome baseball and awesome business book. Thought provoking on how to look at statistics and what really matters.

The Singularity is Near

If it is right it changes everything. Even if it is only close to right it means that automation security will become one the most significant issues there is. (yes I know that sounds outrageous. You will have to read it and think to understand what I mean by that). Brings "Engines of Creation" into an easier to digest format. (though definitely that should be a read as well. Perhaps I should dig it out again)

Army of Davids

A phenomenal take on the existing trends that already exist and have occurred in the last several years. Written by Instapundit one of my daily reads.

Corporate Confidential

Blunt and Honest a light approach to the "Prince" of our time.

Execution

The title say it all.

Fiction and more later
